What happened at Wagait Beach? Investigating the death of Jonathan Hempel
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. In June 2018, American soil scientist Jonathan Hempel was living at Wagait Beach, across the harbour from Darwin, with his partner Cathy Lin. On the night of June 4, the pair caught the ferry home from Cullen Bay. Not long after they arrived at their property, Jonathan was critically injured in an incident involving Cathy's Landcruiser. At first, what had happened appeared to have a straightforward explanation. But as police and the NT Coroner began looking more closely at the circumstances surrounding Jonathan’s death, questions emerged that weren’t so easily answered. What followed was a police investigation, criminal charges and a coronial inquest that would eventually lead Coroner Greg Cavanagh to raise some serious concerns of his own. This week on Territory Famous, we look at the death of Jonathan Hempel, what happened that night at Wagait Beach, and why years later, there are still questions about exactly what happened.
