Ukraine strikes and diplomacy In Ukraine, there were two notable developments. A Russian strike reportedly killed workers at a steel plant, adding to what has become the deadliest recent period for civilians in months. At the same time, European and U.S. leaders have aligned on a set of principles for talks with Russia, while President Zelensky is insisting Ukraine must be directly involved in any negotiation. Drones reshape trade and security The United States made two drone-related moves that point in the same direction: tighter control at home and broader coordination abroad. President Trump imposed a 100 percent tariff on certain imported drones and related parts, a step aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers, especially in strategically sensitive technology. The likely tradeoff is higher costs in the near term for American buyers and businesses. Separately, the U.S. military has created its first multinational drone task force in the Middle East as it prepares a carrier transition in the region. Lettuce outbreak spreads wider In U.S. public health news, the Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has now spread to 17 states, with thousands of reported cases.
