A name is not a label. It is an event, an inheritance, and an invocation. In the traditions we come from, naming was ceremony, the Akan day name wrapping a child in the energy of their birth day, the Yoruba Isọmọ Lórúkọ on the seventh or eighth day, elders gathered, honey and salt on the tongue, destiny spoken out loud. To know a name, truly, was to know part of a soul. Which is exactly why, on this soil, the name was among the first things taken.
