Live-In Care Misconceptions: What Can a Live-In Carer Actually Do?
Sep 24, 202611 min
What can a live-in carer actually do, and can live-in care support someone with more complex health needs at home? In this episode of The Care Podcast, Jo Cleary speaks to Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-In Care at Unique Senior Care, about some of the most common misconceptions families have about live-in care. Families may assume that conditions such as Parkinson's or cancer mean someone's needs are too complex for live-in care because a live-in carer isn't a nurse. Sophie explains how live-in carers can work alongside district nurses, consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals to help someone continue living at home. The conversation also explores what a live-in carer can help with day to day, how some healthcare tasks may be delegated following additional training and competency assessment, how live-in carers are matched to clients, and whether having live-in care really means receiving care 24 hours a day. Who this episode is for β Families considering live-in care for a parent or loved one β Anyone wondering what a live-in carer can and cannot do β Families exploring live-in care for someone with complex health needs β People supporting someone living with Parkinson's, cancer or reduced mobility β Families wondering how live-in carers work alongside nurses and healthcare professionals β Anyone wanting to understand how live-in carers are matched with clients β Families comparing live-in care with other care options In this episode we cover β What a live-in carer can actually help with at home β Whether live-in care can support someone with complex health conditions β The difference between live-in care and nursing care β How live-in carers work alongside nurses and healthcare professionals β Personal care, meal preparation, household tasks and community activities β Physiotherapy exercises and supporting someone's mobility at home β What delegated healthcare tasks are and how they work β Support with insulin, stomas and catheters following appropriate training β How live-in carers are matched to a client's needs and personality β Whether families can choose their live-in carer β What happens if a client and live-in carer don't get along β How many hours a live-in carer works each day β Whether live-in care provides 24-hour care Sophie explains that nursing and live-in care fulfil different roles. While nurses provide clinical support, a live-in carer may help with personal care, washing and dressing, preparing meals, laundry, shopping, maintaining the home and helping someone continue doing the things they enjoy in their community. How Live-In Care Can Help Rebuild Independence and Daily Routine
Sep 17, 20266 min
How can live-in care help someone regain their independence, confidence and daily routine? In this episode of The Care Podcast, we explore how person-centred live-in care can help someone rebuild their life at home after a period of ill health, residential care or changes to their mental health. Sometimes a person's current routine isn't necessarily the routine they would choose. Changes in mobility, confidence or circumstances can mean someone gradually stops doing the things that used to be part of everyday life. Live-in care can provide the support and encouragement needed to rediscover those routines, set meaningful goals and gradually regain independence. We also share a real example of someone who returned home after receiving mental health support. With encouragement from live-in care, she gradually returned to painting, horse riding and walking on the beach. After around 18 months, she no longer needed live-in care because she had rebuilt her life and independence. Who this is for β Families considering live-in care for a loved one β Families supporting someone returning home after residential care β Anyone worried about a loved one losing confidence or independence β People wanting to understand person-centred live-in care β Families exploring care and support for someone experiencing mental health difficulties In this episode we cover β How live-in care can help someone rebuild their daily routine β Returning home after living in residential care β Understanding what someone's natural routine actually looks like β Setting small, meaningful goals to rebuild independence β Helping someone return to activities they previously enjoyed β How live-in care can provide encouragement and emotional support β A real example of rebuilding independence through live-in care β Why live-in care doesn't necessarily have to be permanent Good care isn't simply about completing tasks for someone. It's about understanding the life they want to live and finding safe, realistic ways of helping them enjoy more of it. Even something as simple as visiting the local newsagent, buying a newspaper and spending time in the park can represent an important step towards regaining independence when someone hasn't been able to do it for months. The episode explains how goals like this can be broken down and reintroduced gradually. What does a live-in carer actually do all day? Are they with you 24 hours a day, and do you have to change your routine once someone moves into your home? In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains what day-to-day life with a live-in carer can really look like. Rather than taking over someone's routine, live-in care should work around the way they already choose to live. That might mean helping someone get washed and dressed before leaving them to enjoy breakfast and the newspaper alone, making a morning cup of tea for someone at risk of falling, supporting appointments and activities, or simply being nearby when help is needed. Sophie also explains how live-in care can adapt when someone's needs become more complex, including dementia support, personal care, continence care, mobility and rehabilitation, overnight support and even multiple carers providing round-the-clock care at home. Who this episode is for β Families considering live-in care for a parent or loved one β Anyone wondering what a live-in carer actually does during the day β Older people worried that live-in care will change their normal routine β Families supporting someone living with dementia or mobility difficulties β Anyone wondering whether complex care can still be provided at home β Families comparing live-in care with moving into a care home In this episode we cover β What a typical day with a live-in carer actually looks like β Whether a live-in carer stays with you all day β How your existing morning and evening routines are maintained β Having privacy and time to yourself with a carer living at home β How live-in carers help with meals, personal care and everyday tasks β Dementia care, activities, appointments and rehabilitation at home β Supporting mobility, continence and communication needs β How live-in care works for people with more complex physical needs β Whether two live-in carers can support someone at the same time β How overnight and 24-hour care can be provided at home β How your preferences and routines become part of your care plan About Unique Senior Care Unique Senior Care provides personalised home care and live-in care designed around each individual's needs, routines and choices. Lasting Power of Attorney & Care: When Can Family Make Decisions?
Sep 3, 20269 min
When can someone with a Lasting Power of Attorney make care decisions for a parent or loved one? And if someone is receiving care at home, how much information can their family legally and appropriately be told? In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains how consent, mental capacity and Lasting Power of Attorney can affect decisions about someone's care. One important misconception is that having Power of Attorney automatically gives a family member control over someone's decisions. Sophie explains why a person who has capacity can continue making their own choices, even when their family or care provider considers those choices unwise. The conversation also explores how mental capacity can depend on the specific decision being made, what happens when someone cannot make a particular decision themselves, and how best-interest and least-restrictive decisions can help protect someone's safety without unnecessarily taking away their independence. Who this episode is for β Families with a parent or loved one receiving care at home β Anyone with Lasting Power of Attorney for a parent or relative β Families wondering when Power of Attorney can be used β People trying to understand mental capacity and care decisions β Families supporting someone living with dementia β Anyone concerned about privacy, consent and sharing care information In this episode we cover β When care providers can share information with family members β Why a client's consent comes before a family's request for information β When Lasting Power of Attorney becomes relevant to care decisions β Whether Power of Attorney lets you make decisions for someone who still has capacity β Why making an "unwise" decision does not automatically mean someone lacks capacity β How mental capacity can differ depending on the decision being made β How decisions are made when someone cannot decide for themselves β What a best-interest decision means in care β How the least-restrictive approach can protect safety and independence β How care reviews can keep families appropriately involved About Unique Senior Care Unique Senior Care provides personalised home care and live-in care designed around each individual's needs, choices and circumstances. What Is Live-In Care Really Like? Privacy, Independence & Your Home
Aug 28, 20269 min
What is live-in care really like, and does having a carer living with you mean giving up your privacy or independence? For many people considering live-in care, one of the biggest concerns is what it will feel like to have someone else living in their home. In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ludbrook, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains how live-in care works and how the right support can fit around someone's existing home, relationships and routines rather than taking them over. From deciding how carers rotate to establishing boundaries around family visits, household tasks, pets and time alone, Sophie explains why personalised care planning is so important. A live-in carer doesn't need to be someone's shadow. They can provide companionship and support when it's wanted while still allowing someone the space and independence that matters to them. Who this episode is for β Families considering live-in care for a parent or loved one β Older people worried about losing their privacy or independence β Couples wondering how a live-in carer would affect life at home β Families comparing live-in care with residential care β Anyone wanting to understand how live-in care actually works In this episode we cover β What live-in care is and how it works β When live-in care may be considered instead of visiting care β Whether live-in carers stay permanently or rotate β How boundaries are established when a carer moves in β Maintaining privacy when family and friends visit β How couples can retain control of their own household β Continuing routines such as walking the dog independently β Whether a live-in carer will be with you all the time β How carers balance companionship with giving someone space β How personalised care plans protect someone's preferences and independence Thinking About Live-In Care?
