The False Opposition Between Meritocracy and DEI, with Paolo Gaudiano and Cynthia Overton
Jul 25, 20261h 1mS2
What would it mean to have a true meritocracy at work? What does meritocracy really mean? How would we measure it? How would it improve the work that we are doing? In this episode, Dr. Michael Baran interviews co-authors Paolo Gaudiano and Cynthia Overton about their new book, Meritocracy: How to manage talent for higher profits and happier people . In this book, Paolo and Cynthia bring clarity to the concept of meritocracy which has been riddled with misunderstanding and misuse. We discuss how to be precise with the definition of the term, how to measure meritocracy, what gets in the way of meritocracy, and what the benefits of what they describe as “inclusive meritocracy” can be. As the work world experiences dramatic changes, it’s essential to be able to show the data about why inclusion and meritocracy matter. This book, and this episode, could not be more timely. Sometimes life forces us to be more reflective, more expansive in our thinking. It breaks us out of patterned ways of working. Have you taken the time to step back and think about recent changes to the way we work? How has politics and technology and current events shaped how we think about work, about leadership, about ourselves? In this episode, Dr. Michael Baran interviews bestselling author, speaker, and strategic advisor Jennifer Brown about her new book, The Shape of Change: On Leadership, Resilience, and the Urgent Art of Becoming More Human, Together. Jennifer and Michael reflect on many big picture issues: how to consider and value yourself when your work context changes dramatically, what inclusion means when you have non-human colleagues (AI), where the work of inclusion is heading, valuing humanity even through major disruption, leading through a BANI (brittle, anxious, nonlinear, and incomprehensible) world, and so much more. This conversation will be especially valuable if you are someone who leads an organization, someone who manages people, or someone who works to make organizations more fair, equitable, and inclusive for all.
