Christos Kantzavelos | Building a Family Restaurant That Lasts: The Greek Islands Story
On this episode of The Daily Edge, Marc Nudelberg sits down with Christos Kantzavelos of Greek Islands Taverna for a conversation about growing up in the family restaurant business, carrying forward his father's legacy and learning how to build a life outside of a business that has been part of his family for nearly three decades. The Greek Islands story began long before the restaurant opened its doors in 1999. Christos's father and uncle spent years in the hospitality industry before taking over a Miami Subs franchise on A1A in Fort Lauderdale. The business struggled, and Christos remembers a childhood when his family shared a small condo, relied on one car and made sacrifices to keep the restaurant afloat.Eventually, his father convinced the landlord to let him pursue his own concept. He spent seven weeks renovating the space himself, repurposing old equipment and drawing on his mother's traditional Greek recipes to create Greek Islands. The restaurant nearly matched an entire week's worth of Miami Subs sales on its opening night.Twenty-seven years later, Greek Islands has become a Fort Lauderdale institution, with 83 employees, generations of loyal customers and a family that has expanded its business into commercial real estate. Christos shares how consistency, loyal employees and genuine hospitality have sustained Greek Islands for nearly three decades, while opening up about family business succession, burnout and the personal changes that have helped him become a more present husband, father and leader.IN THIS EPISODE:* How Christos's father and uncle got their start in the restaurant business* What growing up during the family's struggling Miami Subs years taught him about entrepreneurship* How seven weeks of renovations turned a failing franchise into Greek Islands Taverna* Why consistency has been central to the restaurant's success for nearly three decades* How making customers feel recognized creates lasting relationships* Why employee retention matters and how Greek Islands has kept some servers for more than 25 years* What Christos learned by working his way through the restaurant before taking on a leadership role* How purchasing the original property and expanding into commercial real estate changed the family's business* The challenges of working alongside his father and navigating the next generation of leadership* Why developing a management team he trusts has allowed Christos to spend more time with his family* How burnout and his decision to stop drinking changed the way he approaches work and life* Why stepping away from social media and setting boundaries have helped him become more presentTHE EDGE:Christos's edge is the clarity he has developed around what deserves his time and attention. After years of believing he needed to be at the restaurant every night, he has learned to prioritize his health, protect his mental space and trust the people he has developed to carry the business forward. He still approaches hospitality with the same enthusiasm he learned from his father, treating every night at Greek Islands like he is welcoming guests into his own home. The difference is that he now has a better understanding of how to sustain that enthusiasm while being present for the people waiting for him at home.New episodes of The Daily Edge drop every week, featuring candid conversations with entrepreneurs, executives, athletes and business leaders about the experiences, decisions and relationships that shaped the way they operate. The Daily Edge is powered by On the Ball.
