Episode #2
Love and Cariño: A Conversation with Latinx Teachers
We are so excited to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with an episode that spotlights and honors the amazing Latinx teaching workforce we have here in Washington, DC. Latinx teachers bring a wealth of deep culture and global perspective to our schools, as well as reflecting the diverse experiences of the many Latinx students and families who attend our schools. Yet, despite their importance in education, we don't often take the time to consider what wellness means for a Latinx educator, including the ways our system can better support their participation and retention in our schools. Because of this, we were so excited for our newest staff member, Jackeline Pena—Manager of Educator Support and Impact—to feature Latinx teacher voices loudly and proudly on our podcast and in DC. Jackie is joined by two other amazing Latinx educators: Leidy Moreno, a Kindergarten teacher who hails from Cali, Colombia, and Carlos Granados, a third grade teacher from the DMV with deep family roots in El Salvador. Together, they explore both the beauty and challenges of what it means to be a Latinx educator. Specifically, they discuss: The cultural traditions that help build their classroom communities The impact of the past year on Latinx students, families, and teachers The permission slip every Latinx educator needs And much more! As you'll hear, there are many laughs and important realizations these three share. We are so grateful to Jackie, Leidy, and Carlos for sharing so openly with us, and for the Latinx educators who serve our students with love and cariño each day. Wishing all our listeners a happy Hispanic Heritage Month. Enjoy the episode! Thank you for listening!
