I trace Ben Carroll's political trajectory from a suburban Airport West childhood through his 1996 Labor branch membership, years as a political adviser, the 2012 Niddrie by-election, his rise through cabinet, and his path to becoming the 50th Premier of Victoria.   The System Is Broken. But Nobody Is Responsible.

  What happens when two completely different industries end up trapped by the exact same kind of system? A man trying to build an innovative house couldn't get approval because he couldn't prove the technology without building it, and couldn't build it without financing. Meanwhile, Emeka was facing a remarkably similar problem delivering essential care to older Australians in remote parts of the country. In this episode, Emeka Edwin goes down the rabbit hole of Australia's aged-care system, examining the funding, bureaucracy and incentives that can make it harder to deliver care where it is needed most. He breaks down how a program supporting hundreds of thousands of older Australians could account for a relatively small share of aged-care spending, why providers are struggling with administrative burdens, and how supposedly flexible funding can force vulnerable people to choose between basic aspects of their dignity and care. Then it gets personal. Emeka reveals how these changes affected his own organisation, why he made a submission to a Senate committee, and what happened when he finally got the opportunity to present his real-world experience directly to Parliament. The bigger question is this: What if nobody has to deliberately break a system for the system to produce broken outcomes? Because when incentives are wrong, nobody needs to conspire.   Why We Stopped Building (Part 2): The $138 Shower

  55% of everyone in Australia's aged care system. 8% of the budget. And the government is phasing it out. In Part 1, I told you about a man who couldn't build a house — not because it was illegal, but because the system handed him every rule written for a different technology and dared him to comply. This week, I found the exact same trap in my own backyard. I run a care organisation that delivers clinical care — physio, OT, psychology — to older Australians in some of the most remote parts of the country: East Arnhem, the Kimberley, the Pilbara. Places where if we don't fly in, nobody does. The government funds an hour of allied health at $138.96. Out there, it actually costs us $450–$530 to deliver. Every visit runs at a loss — and that's not even the part that stops me. This is a story about incentives. About a program that serves 840,000 older Australians on a fraction of the budget and gets "rewarded" with being replaced. About a registered nurse telling the Senate that frail, complex patients now have to choose — each week — between a daily shower, a daily meal, or wound care. About the independent umpire whose entire job is to oversee aged care telling parliament she could not identify why any of this is happening. Nobody conspired. Every rule was proposed sincerely, debated properly, passed legally. Incentives did the rest. Friction is never neutral — it's a transfer from the people trying to build to the people who already own.   Australia Builds Half As Many Homes As It Did In 1995

  Why is it so difficult to build differently in Australia? In this conversation, I sit down with Tim Volkman to talk about construction, innovation, and what happens when someone tries to challenge an industry that has been doing things the same way for generations. Tim has been working on a radically different approach to construction using 3D printing technology. But the technology itself isn't necessarily the biggest challenge. The bigger challenge is everything around it. Regulation. Approvals. Finance. Insurance. Risk. And a system where everyone can have a legitimate reason for saying, "We need more evidence," without anyone actually taking responsibility for getting the idea across the finish line. That led us into a much bigger conversation about Australia. Why are we so good at creating new technology but so slow at adopting it? Why can something be technically possible but practically impossible to implement? And what happens when the systems designed to protect us from risk start preventing us from trying anything new? We also get into the way incentives shape behaviour, why competition matters, how education influences the way people think, and whether Australia has become too comfortable with the way things have always been done. For me, the most interesting part of this conversation isn't the 3D printer. It's the question behind it: What else could we be building if we stopped making innovation so difficult?   'The Lucky Country' Was Never A Compliment

Except the phrase does not actually mean what most Australians think it means. The phrase came from a bloke named Donald Horne. And when he wrote it, he was not praising Australia. He was criticising it. He was saying Australia succeeds despite its leadership, not because of it. Which raises a much darker question. If we have spent decades repeating a phrase without actually asking what it meant, what else have we been repeating without checking? Because if Australia really is as rich as we keep telling ourselves, why is every conversation these days a survival conversation? Rent, mortgage, groceries, power bills, interest rates.
