#61 - Greg Henderson - Just A Blip, A Lesson in Perspective
It takes a village to raise a child, and Greg Henderson has been a piece of that village for our whole town for nearly three decades, first as many of my peers' 8th grade teacher, then as my elementary school principal. In this episode, we trace his own story: how he became one piece of that village, and the journey that got him there. Some of you may remember Mr. Henderson from May Day Play Day, hoarse voiced and fired up like no other, rallying the troops before tug-of-war. We get into that, and so much more… The teachers and classmates who shaped him as a kid, the moment in college when he realized how many of the people who shaped him were teachers, and it clicked that he wanted to be the 8th grade boys' teacher, the exact role he'd go on to fill, wrestling with imposter syndrome as both a young teacher and later a principal, and doing his best to stay a present husband and father through it all. At the center of it is a lesson Greg carries from his 7th grade teacher, who he'd later go on to co-teach 8th grade alongside, that our time here is just a blip, and what matters more than raising sharp, successful citizens is helping the people in front of you grow toward something eternal. It's the perspective that's driven his entire career, and by the end of this conversation, I think it'll shift the way you see living and teaching too. Welcome to Episode 61.
