Episode Summary Picture a poet stepping out of a crowded banquet hall. Seconds later, behind him, the roof collapses and crushes every guest beyond recognition. Only he can name the dead, because he remembers exactly where each of them had been sitting. From that grim scene, the tradition says, came the oldest deliberate memory technique in the Western world. And 2,500 years later, champions still use it to memorize a shuffled deck of cards in under twenty seconds, while brain scanners watch them do it. In this episode we open the heart of Arc 3 by exploring the method of loci, better known as the memory palace: the trick of placing vivid, exaggerated images along a route through a place you already know, then walking that route in your mind to bring them back.
