The Darkest Stories of Lilith
The traditional Genesis tale explains that when Adam was still in the Garden of Eden, he was lacking a suitable companion. To the average reader, the biblical God is known to then create Eve by shaping her out of one Adam’s ribs in the second chapter of Genesis, and this is naturally presumed to be the first woman. However, some ancient scholars and rabbis took issue with this idea of Eve being the ‘first woman’, for previously in the first chapter of Genesis, God is specified as creating both man and woman here. ‘So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.’ (Genesis 1:27 ).It would appear to these ancient readers that this first instance of creation contradicted the sequential creation in Genesis 2:22 . How could Eve be the first woman if another woman was already seen to be created in God’s image a chapter prior? In an effort to resolve this contradiction, the ancient rabbis came to refer to this female created in Genesis 1:27 as Adam’s ‘first wife’, whom they named Lilith.
