Does Fiber Cause Bloating? Why More Fiber Can Make Constipation Worse
Psyllium in your water, chia in your oats, beans at lunch, and by 3 pm your jeans don't button. The internet says more fiber, more water, more patience. Dr. Steve Presciutti explains why that advice fails a large group of people, and how to tell if you're one of them. Your bacteria treat fiber as food. In a warm, fast-moving gut that works out fine. In a cold, slow, hypothyroid or acid-blocked gut, fermentable fiber sits in the small intestine with an overgrown colony, and you get gas, bloating and constipation. The Devastating Truth: "Your gut will adapt" was tested in 1995. Eating fermentable fiber daily for two weeks did not improve tolerance. 54% of people with autoimmune hypothyroidism tested positive for bacterial overgrowth, vs 5% of controls (2007). 41 constipated patients who stopped fiber went from a bowel movement every 3 to 4 days to daily, and all 41 lost their bloating (2012). You'll Discover: Fermentable vs non-fermentable fiber, and why the difference matters Why your thyroid sets gut transit time, and transit decides whether fiber helps or feeds an overgrowth Why methane-type overgrowth makes you more constipated on fiber The honest pro-fiber evidence, and who those trials left out Why your microbiome is a mirror of your diet, and whether probiotics are worth it Do you need fiber at all? Where the carnivore crowd is right, and where they have it backwards When bloating is not a diet problem: the red flags that mean see your doctor Ray Peat's raw carrot salad, and which parts are evidence vs reasoning A step-by-step protocol with temperature and pulse targets Real Transformations: Dana, 44: Hashimoto's with a normal TSH, bowel movements every 3 to 4 days on 45 g of fiber a day. Six weeks later: daily, waking temp 96.9°F to 97.9°F, no afternoon bloating. Greg, 51: 7 years on omeprazole, positive breath test. Tapered with his prescriber and switched to digestible carbs. Temp 97.0°F to 98.0°F in 3 months. Your Action Steps: Shelve fiber powders, chia, bran and big bean portions for two weeks. Eat carbs you absorb: ripe fruit, orange juice, honey, milk if tolerated, well-cooked starch eaten warm. Eat a raw carrot salad daily between meals, and space meals 3 to 5 hours apart. Track waking and afternoon temperature and resting pulse. Full framework: Energy Reset Essentials ($39).
