Day 15: Protection from Heresy
Key Scripture “Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.” — Revelation 3:11 (NKJV) Devotional Christ is the bread of life, the spiritual manna we need to have eternal life (John 6:32-33, Exodus 16:4, 31). Whereas the Gospel of Christ is not hidden, the power of His resurrection and life-giving Spirit are only experienced by those that overcome their human nature and offer themselves wholly for God’s service. Being filled with the Holy Spirit and devoting ourselves to studying God’s word daily will enable us to grow in a victorious relationship with the Lord Jesus, strengthen our knowledge of Him and protect us from heresy. The knowledge of scriptures and being filled with the Holy Spirit are essential for ensuring a firm foundation. Lack of this will lead to inability to stand against the spirit of deception, disobedience and false teaching (Rev. 2:20). The environment we live in may contribute a lot to a believer’s corruption. An individual, as well as tradition or culture, can promote practices that contribute to one’s spiritual defilement. Whereas this may not be within a believer’s ultimate control, adopting such practices is evil and leads to the wrath of God. At the time of judgement those who have refused to listen but kept on sinning and indulging in earthly pleasures will be at a great risk of being caught up by God’s wrath. Christ’s message to the church in Sardis warned that the earthly reputation we have may not be the truth. He said, “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” (Rev. 3:1). Seeking the praise of men is an illusion, “for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). Christ recognised the church in Philadelphia for its perseverance but he did not stop there. He warned them, “Hold fast what you have that no one may take your crown!” (Rev. 3:11). He warned them because He knew very well that they could fall. The warning to the church of Philadelphia is for every God-fearing Christian. We must hold fast what we have – the grace, love, life eternal that we have attained through Christ. Questions for Reflection The power of Christ is experienced by those who “overcome their human nature.” What does this mean to you in a practical, daily sense? In what specific ways do studying Scripture and being filled with the Holy Spirit protect us from false teaching? Can you think of a time when this was true in your own life? What are some “traditions or cultures” in our modern environment that might contribute to spiritual defilement, even if they seem harmless on the surface? How can we avoid the trap of the church in Sardis—having a reputation for being “alive” but spiritually being “dead”? How do we check the true state of our heart? What does it look like to “hold fast” to what we have in Christ? What things try to “take your crown”? Action Step This week, identify one area where you might be influenced more by cultural opinion or outward appearances than by God’s truth. Spend dedicated time in prayer and Scripture study focused on that specific area, asking the Holy Spirit to strengthen your foundation and reveal His truth to you. Prayer Prompt Father, thank You for the spiritual manna, Jesus Christ, who is the true bread of life. Fill me anew with Your Holy Spirit and give me a deep hunger for Your Word, so I may build my life on a firm foundation. Protect me from all heresy and deception. Grant me the wisdom to see past the illusions of this world and the praise of men, and to care only about what You see in my heart. Give me the strength to persevere and “hold fast” to the grace and eternal life You have given me, so that no one may take my crown. Amen.
