You Can't Teach What You Haven't Learned: Emotional Regulation for Moms (with Arielle Kempler)
Send us Fan Mail We spend so much time thinking about what our children need—how to help them regulate, manage big feelings, build resilience, and develop emotional intelligence. But what happens when we're trying to teach skills we were never taught ourselves? In this episode, I’m joined by trauma-informed psychotherapist Arielle Kempler for an honest conversation about the emotional experience of parenting and why caring for ourselves is so deeply connected to how we show up for our children. We talk about what happens when our child's behavior activates our own fears, expectations, and old patterns; why trying to avoid or “fix” difficult feelings can actually make parenting harder; and how learning to notice what's happening in our own bodies can help us respond with more clarity and intention. We also get into boundaries, mom guilt, self-care, emotional regulation, and the pressure so many mothers feel to put everyone else's needs ahead of their own. Because our children don't just learn emotional regulation from what we tell them. They learn by watching us experience emotions, care for ourselves, set boundaries, make mistakes, and find our way back. Maybe the work isn't becoming perfectly regulated parents. Maybe it's becoming more connected to ourselves while we grow alongside our children.
