Office politics isn't just about maneuvering for promotions; it's the invisible current that determines whether good ideas get traction or die in committee. Lucas and Luna, the two co-hosts of Fexingo Business, examine the real mechanics of workplace influence: how decisions actually get made, whose voices carry weight, and what strategies turn a proposal into policy. Drawing on organizational psychology, case studies from companies like Pixar and Bridgewater, and the latest research on network theory, each episode dissects a specific dynamic—whether it's managing up without sycophancy, building coalitions across warring teams, or navigating a toxic culture without becoming toxic yourself. The show is for the mid-career professional who has seen good projects stall and bad ideas advance, and wants to understand the underlying rules of the game. Lucas brings the journalist's skeptical eye for data and precedent; Luna counters with the practitioner's instinct for what actually works in a

How the IKEA Effect Shapes Your Office Influence
Aug 18, 20269 minS4
In this episode of The Office Politics Podcast, Lucas and Luna explore the IKEA effect—our tendency to overvalue things we helped create—and how it quietly shapes office dynamics. From the colleague who overrates their own spreadsheet to the manager whose pet project gets extra funding, the hosts unpack why effort inflates perceived value and how you can use this bias to build influence, win buy-in, and avoid falling for your own handiwork. They discuss real-world examples like LEGO's crowdsourced sets and a famous MIT study on origami and bidding, then offer practical tactics: when to let others tweak your work to gain their commitment, how to give feedback without triggering the IKEA effect, and why managers should beware of escalating sunk costs in their favorite initiatives. If you've ever wondered why your carefully crafted slide deck feels more convincing than the data suggests, this episode has your answer. Tune in for a fresh, psychology-driven look at workplace influence. #IKEAEffect #OfficePolitics #WorkplacePsychology #Influence #BehavioralEconomics #Careers #BusinessPsychology #WorkplaceDynamics #OfficeCulture #DecisionMaking #Persuasion #Teamwork #Management #Productivity #CognitiveBias #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #OfficePoliticsPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
In this episode of The Office Politics Podcast, Lucas and Luna explore the out-group homogeneity effect and how it silently shapes office alliances, blame, and collaboration. They unpack a telling case: a marketing team that blamed the IT department for every software glitch, even when the issue was a typo in their own brief. Listeners learn why we instinctively see 'us' as complex individuals but 'them' as interchangeable types, and how that bias fuels friction between departments, remote and in-office staff, and different generations. The conversation offers practical moves — like forcing yourself to notice the one person who breaks the stereotype — to loosen the grip of mental shortcuts and build more honest working relationships. If you've ever wondered why a minor disagreement escalates into a full-blown office feud, this episode gives you the psychological wiring behind it and a few tools to switch it off. #OutGroupHomogeneity #OfficePolitics #WorkplaceDynamics #CognitiveBias #TeamDynamics #WorkplacePsychology #InGroupBias #OfficeRivalry #InterdepartmentalConflict #RemoteWork #HybridWork #BiasAtWork #Careers #Communication #Leadership #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #OfficePoliticsPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How the Spotlight Effect Puffs Up Your Office Mistakes
Aug 16, 20269 minS4
In this episode of The Office Politics Podcast, Lucas and Luna explore why small office mistakes feel catastrophic and how the spotlight effect inflates our perception of others' attention. Drawing on a 2000 study by Thomas Gilovich and colleagues, they discuss the 'spotlight effect' and its impact on workplace behavior, from missed deadlines to awkward Zoom moments. They share practical strategies to recalibrate your internal spotlight, including the 'temporal zoom' technique and the 'observer's perspective' shift. If you've ever replayed a minor blunder in your head for days, this episode offers a liberating perspective. Plus, a note on how listener support keeps the show ad-free. #SpotlightEffect #OfficePolitics #WorkplacePsychology #CognitiveBiases #CareerAdvice #WorkplaceDynamics #PsychologyAtWork #Gilovich #BehavioralEconomics #SelfPerception #OfficeCulture #ProfessionalGrowth #Mindset #WorkplaceMistakes #Overthinking #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #Careers Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How the Availability Heuristic Distorts Your Office Reputation
Aug 15, 202611 minS4
In this episode, Lucas and Luna unpack the availability heuristic — the mental shortcut that makes the most recent or vivid information feel like the most important. They explore how this bias shapes office politics, from performance reviews to promotion decisions, and why a single mistake can haunt you while a year of good work gets overlooked. Using real-world examples like a missed deadline that overshadows months of wins, they explain how the recency effect and emotional intensity skew our judgments at work. They also share practical strategies for making your contributions more memorable, such as documenting wins, using storytelling, and timing your visibility. If you've ever felt like your hard work goes unnoticed while one slip-up defines you, this episode offers insight into why that happens — and what you can do about it. Tune in for a practical guide to navigating the hidden biases that shape your professional reputation. #AvailabilityHeuristic #OfficePolitics #WorkplaceDynamics #ReputationManagement #CognitiveBiases #PerformanceReviews #CareerGrowth #DecisionMaking #WorkplacePsychology #Influence #Productivity #Leadership #Careers #Business #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #WorkplaceCulture #BiasInTheWorkplace Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
The Halo Effect at Work: How One Trait Colors Everything
Aug 14, 20269 minS4
Ever wonder why that one colleague gets away with everything while you're micromanaged? It might be the halo effect — a cognitive bias where one positive trait (looks, confidence, a great presentation) spills over to color every other judgment about you. In this episode, Lucas and Luna break down the halo effect at work: how it shapes performance reviews, hiring decisions, and whose ideas get approval. They use real examples — like a study where a professor's warm demeanor made students rate his teaching higher — and share practical moves to either harness the halo for yourself or minimize its unfair impact on your team. If you've ever felt invisible in a meeting next to a naturally charismatic coworker, this one's for you. Tune in for a fresh angle on office politics that explains a lot of the 'unfairness' you see everyday. #HaloEffect #OfficePolitics #WorkplaceBias #CareerAdvice #PerformanceReviews #HiringBias #FirstImpressions #Influence #Perception #Leadership #PsychologyOfWork #CognitiveBias #BusinessPodcast #Careers #FexingoBusiness #Fexingo #WorkplaceDynamics #GettingThingsDone Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
