The Operating List is part of the Australasian Students’ Surgical Association which was founded in 2015 as a way of connecting the surgically inclined students of Australia and New Zealand. Today, we represent over 25 student surgical societies and have 600 members. We started this podcast as a way of connecting to our members and providing them with surgical education as well as insights into a career in surgery.

Dr Grigg AM is an ENT surgeon based in Toowoomba, Queensland. He has particular interest in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head and neck cancers, and facial reconstructive plastic surgery.   Creative Careers in Medicine | Dr. Amandeep Hansra

  Today, we’re joined by Dr Amandeep Hansra, a GP and leader in the digital health space, whose career demonstrates the breadth of opportunities within a medical career. Alongside 18 years of clinical experience, Dr. Amandeep has has served as Chief Medical Officer of Telstra Health, led Telstra’s telemedicine business ReadyCare and worked with organisations including Medibank, nib and the Department of Home Affairs. She is now the Chief Clinical Adviser in Medicine at the Australian Digital Health Agency. Dr. Amandeep is also the founder of Creative Careers in Medicine, a community of more than 25,000 members that helps doctors and medical students explore careers both within and beyond traditional clinical practice. In this episode, we speak with Amandeep about how her own career has evolved, and the importance of doctors remaining open to opportunities outside the pathways they may have originally imagined. We also discuss the upcoming Creative Careers in Medicine conference, taking place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September on the Gold Coast. This year’s theme is about challenging inherited expectations, letting go of traditional ideas about what a medical career should look like and exploring what might come next.

  Making a Military and Trauma Orthopaedic Surgeon | Dr. Ian Young

  Dr Ian Young’s path to orthopaedic surgery has been anything but conventional. Originally from Canada, Ian served in the Canadian Forces before moving to Australia and transferring to the Royal Australian Navy. He later trained as an orthopaedic surgeon and became the Navy’s only full-time medical specialist at the time. In this special collaboration between The Operating List and MUSIG’s Cut to Cure, Ian discusses his pathway into orthopaedic training, including the challenges of establishing a medical career in a new country, and the realities of combining surgical and military careers.
