No one knows everything, but everyone knows something no one else knows! We live in an age of extremes, where certainty is prized and nuance is often lost. Yet life happens mostly in the in-between—in the twilight places where opposites meet, where identities soften, and where deeper truths reveal themselves. On The Other Side of Things Podcast we explore these liminal realms. Drawing from psychology, mythology, spirituality, creativity, nature, and lived experience, together we explore the thresholds between worlds, perspectives, and ways of knowing, seeking a form of wisdom spacious enough to hold paradox, complexity, and wonder. This is a podcast for curious souls who sense that reality is always larger than our explanations of it—and that the deepest insights are often found on the other side of certainty. My guest today is Dr. John Beebe, Jungian analyst, psychiatrist, author, teacher, film scholar, and creator of the influential eight-function archetypal model of psychological type. John first came onto my radar many years ago through my studies at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco in the late 80's. Around that same time, I discovered John's work in what would later become Jung Journal: Culture & Psyche, and I was immediately captivated by his ability to illuminate Jungian psychology through film, culture, dreams, and type theory. Then, 21 years ago at a conference in Birmingham, Alabama, John encouraged me to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a filmmaker and to dedicate myself more fully to music, the creative pursuit that made me feel most alive as an INFP. That conversation left a profound and lasting imprint on my life and deeply affirmed my true nature. Over the next two decades, his words helped shape the person I am today: a deeply empathic and highly sensitive INFP who feels most whole when engaged in meaningful creative work. That journey led me to become an award-winning filmmaker, a four-time Grammy-nominated musician, an author, a creative consultant for the soul's journey, and a podcaster devoted to exploring what it means to live with greater authenticity, creativity, and wholeness. In this episode, we explore some of the themes that have become central to both of our journeys: Jung's concern with one-sidedness, the many forms of consciousness, the INFP shadow stack, integrity and wholeness, and the role of creativity and imagination in individuation. At the heart of the conversation is John’s powerful phrase, “consciousness is the water of life”, which he shares for the first time here - which opens into a deeper reflection on the reservoir of consciousness, the transformation of shadow, and the lifelong work of becoming whole.
