How To Series – How to Make Play a Priority with Philip Steigman
In this episode of The PlayFull Podcast, Kristine Michie is joined by Philip Steigman, Doris Duke Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy. Together, they explore a critical question: why do we promote and celebrate play with babies and toddlers – and then systematically squeeze it out of school and other places kids hang out as they age? Through his work with the Future of Thriving initiative, Philip discusses how re-centering play, connection, and purpose in both policy and community reverse trends of loneliness and depression in young people. From navigating the impact of screens to redesigning cross-sector ecosystems, this conversation offers a roadmap for aligning our systems with the true science of child development. Key Takeaways: Research clearly shows that play, back-and-forth interactions, and meaningful experiences are core to healthy brain development, yet most systems stop honoring this once children enter formal schooling. Modern life—especially screens, safety concerns, and over-structured schedules—has eroded unstructured, child-led play, meaning it must now be intentionally created within our communities. Thriving is multi-dimensional—built on basic needs, curiosity, agency, identity, relationships, and purpose—and it unfolds differently across early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Current metrics like test scores and graduation rates are poor proxies for true well-being; communities need shared definitions and dashboards that track purpose, social connectedness, and self-efficacy. Systemic change requires cross-sector collaboration—educators, pediatricians, faith leaders, policymakers, and families must align around a shared "North Star" of what children actually need to flourish. "You can't promote thriving together until you agree on what thriving is. " — Philip Steigman "Nobody's going to come and save us. We don't have a Department of Children. Nobody's saying, We have this agenda now for thriving young people. So, I think we have to do it ourselves.
