Data protection is the new civil rights battleground. Lucas and Luna navigate the shifting landscape of digital privacy — from GDPR enforcement actions and ePrivacy Regulation updates to the practical implications of state-level US privacy laws like the CPRA and Virginia's VCDPA. Each episode centers on a single regulatory decision, corporate data breach, or emerging technology (think federated learning, differential privacy, or zero-knowledge proofs) and strips away the marketing hype to reveal what it actually means for businesses and individuals. Lucas, a journalist covering tech policy, presses for the operational details: How does a multinational adjust its data inventory when Schrems III invalidates a new data transfer mechanism? Luna, a former privacy counsel turned advocate, pushes back on the ethics: When does 'compliance' become a fig leaf for surveillance capitalism? Regular segments include 'Redacted' (analyzing a leaked internal memo on data minimization) and 'The Consent

Why Your Health Insurance App Is a Data Privacy Risk
Aug 21, 20267 minS4
In this episode, Lucas and Luna dig into a privacy blind spot most of us never consider: the health insurance companion apps we install to track claims, check coverage, and manage prescriptions. They walk through how these apps collect far more than the basics, from location and device data to behavioral health signals, and how that information can be repurposed by the insurer, shared with data brokers, or even influence your premium. They anchor the conversation in a real 2025 study that found the top ten health insurance apps in the U.S. transmitted data to an average of six third-party trackers each, including advertising networks. They also explore the legal patchwork, from HIPAA's narrow scope to state-level privacy laws like California's CCPA and Colorado's CPA, and why you should read your app's privacy policy before your next claim. If you've ever wondered what your insurer's app knows about you, this episode gives you a concrete list of questions to ask and settings to check. #HealthInsuranceApps #HealthDataPrivacy #DataBrokers #HIPAA #CCPA #ColoradoCPA #ThirdPartyTrackers #PrivacyPolicy #DigitalPrivacy #ConsumerRights #InsurerSurveillance #LocationData #BehavioralData #Technology #PrivacyPodcast #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #DataProtection Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
Medical alert systems promise safety for seniors, but they collect far more than just fall data. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how these devices capture location, voice, health metrics, and even daily routines — and how that data can end up with insurers, data brokers, or law enforcement. They unpack a real case where a family discovered their mother's alert system had shared her movement patterns with a marketing firm, and discuss the legal gaps, including how HIPAA often doesn't apply. They also offer practical tips for choosing a system that respects privacy, like checking data-sharing policies and opting out of secondary uses. If you're caring for an aging parent or rely on one of these devices yourself, this episode will change how you think about that button on your wrist. #MedicalAlertPrivacy #SeniorDataRisks #DataBrokers #HealthData #HIPAA #PrivacyTechnology #WearablePrivacy #LocationTracking #VoiceData #ElderCarePrivacy #IoTPrivacy #DataProtection #Technology #PrivacyMatters #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #FexingoTech #PrivacyPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
The Data Broker Loophole in Your Car Loan Application
Aug 19, 202610 minS4
In this episode, Lucas and Luna dig into a corner of the consumer credit system most of us never see: the data broker pipeline that car dealerships use to run credit checks. They trace a single loan application from the dealership's finance desk to the credit bureau, exposing how those 'soft pulls' become a permanent financial fingerprint that gets bought and sold by lenders, insurers, and data brokers. Along the way they unpack the Fair Credit Reporting Act's surprising gaps, why the phrase 'pre-qualified' is doing a lot of legal heavy lifting, and what a recent Federal Trade Commission settlement means for consumers. If you've ever wondered why your mailbox fills with car loan offers after a single test drive, this episode explains the mechanics and your rights. Listeners come away with one concrete takeaway: how to freeze your credit file at the three major bureaus and why that can stop the data flow cold. #DataBroker #CarLoan #CreditCheck #FairCreditReportingAct #FTC #ConsumerPrivacy #FinancialData #CreditBureau #SoftPull #HardPull #IdentityTheft #CreditFreeze #PrivacyRights #DealershipFinance #PreQualified #Technology #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
Why Your Prescription Records Are Being Bought and Sold
Aug 18, 20266 minS4
In this episode, Lucas and Luna dig into a quietly exploding market: the sale of prescription records. They trace how pharmacies, data brokers, and even health apps compile and sell your medication history, often without explicit consent. The episode centers on the case of GoodRx, which was fined by the FTC in 2023 for sharing health data with Facebook and Google, and the recent surge in data broker sales of prescription records to third parties. They explain the legal loopholes under HIPAA that allow this, the real-world risks—from insurance discrimination to identity theft—and what listeners can do to protect themselves. Lucas and Luna also discuss proposed legislation like the Health and Location Data Privacy Act and the FTC's new rule on data brokers, giving a clear picture of where the fight for privacy stands today. #PrescriptionRecords #DataBrokers #HealthPrivacy #GoodRx #HIPAA #FTC #HealthData #DataPrivacy #Privacy #GDPR #Technology #DataProtection #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #PrivacyRights #DigitalPrivacy #DataSelling #HealthTech Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
Why Data Brokers Are Buying Your Prescription Records
Aug 17, 20267 minS4
Lucas and Luna dig into the little-known market for prescription data — who's buying it, why it's legal, and what a 2026 court ruling in Maine might change. They walk through how a single pharmacy transaction can end up in a data broker's file, the role of 'de-identification' and its flaws, and how one whistleblower's findings forced a major retailer to change its privacy policy. With real examples like GoodRx and the FTC's enforcement action, they explain the loopholes that let companies sell health data without your explicit consent, and what the new HIPAA updates could mean for your next trip to the pharmacy. #PrescriptionData #DataBrokers #HealthPrivacy #HIPAA #GoodRx #FTC #DeIdentification #PrivacyLaw #PharmacyData #DataSelling #HealthData #PrivacyRights #GDPR #Technology #DataProtection #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #PrivacyPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
