The four beasts correspond to the four-part statue of Nebuchadnezzar's dream, tracing the ruling empires in order, including those still to come. At the center of it all stands a figure who approaches the Ancient of Days: one like a Son of Man, coming on the clouds, receiving everlasting dominion. Both Daniel and Ezekiel are addressed as "son of man," yet Daniel sees a greater Son of Man still to come — and Jesus takes that very title for Himself, declaring that He is the One who will come on the clouds. These chapters lift our eyes above the rise and fall of empires to the King whose kingdom will never pass away. It is often easy for us to lash out at God when we face trouble, but it is during those difficult times that the book of Job challenges us to remain faithful to God, continue turning away from sin, and trust that God is always good, even when we don’t understand why bad things are happening.
