Episode #531
Building the Next Chapter w/ Randy King of King Electric Guitars
This week I’m hanging out with Randy King of King Electric Guitars, and what starts as a conversation about old cars takes approximately four minutes to wander off the road and into something much bigger. Randy has been obsessed with making things for most of his life. He bought his first car at ten years old, spent his youth tearing into old hot rods, served in the Air Force, played music, and eventually found himself building guitars. Now, at 53, King Electric Guitars is beginning to turn from an idea into the next chapter of his life. We get into the strange mechanics of building a small guitar company, why gifting a guitar to Chuck Ragan was both heartfelt and completely calculated, learning to stop tying happiness to accomplishments, getting diagnosed with ADHD later in life, and realizing that maybe the goal isn’t to become a different person. Maybe it’s figuring out how to use the brain, hands, and ridiculous collection of life experiences you already have. There’s also a $75 Oldsmobile, a sketchy Falcon Ranchero, purple alligator “work shoes,” powerlifting, and a gym that apparently runs almost entirely on free weights and ammonia.
