As dean emeritus of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and CEO of the Amos Institute for Medical Faculty Development , he's carrying forward a program the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ran for over four decades. David is a pulmonary critical care physician and renowned for his own physician scientist work in the lab. In the early 1990s, his research uncovered an autoimmune trigger behind lung transplant rejection, a finding colleagues at first dismissed as heresy — he was right, and it earned him the American Thoracic Society's highest honor: The Trudeau Medal.
