Deep Dive S2E2: The Century That Consolidated Liberal Democracy
In the second episode of our Deep Dive series on liberal political ideology, we move into the 19th century, the most turbulent, violent and intellectually fertile period in the history of the modern West. The 19th century was not a comfortable place to live. Factories belched smoke over overcrowded cities, children worked in mines, colonial violence was being inflicted on much of the world, and ideological conflict between communists, anarchists, liberals, conservatives and monarchists produced genuine political violence alongside the pamphlets and parliamentary debates. But running through all of that turbulence was something historically unprecedented: the belief, held by an ever-growing share of the population, that society could be shaped by human action. That tomorrow did not have to look like today. Our video essay traces how the intellectual seeds of the Enlightenment became practical political movements in the 19th century, driven by rising literacy, the power of the printing press, trade unions, mass mobilisation and the spectacular optimism generated by rapid technological progress. Steam trains, early bicycles, the first automobiles, the 1900 Paris World Fair: these were not just engineering achievements. They were proof that humans could bend the future to their will. And when that belief in human agency combines with an increasingly literate and politically engaged working and middle class, the result is the intellectual foundation for liberal democracy. In our discussion, Balder and Dario ask why we do not feel that same optimism today, even though the technological changes around us are at least as dramatic. The answer, they argue, is that the 19th century had something we have largely lost: genuine ideological debate about where society should go, carried by people who believed their participation in that debate actually mattered.
