The Healthcare System Was Never Designed for Women with Nicola Harker
In this deeply moving episode of Things I Want My Daughters to Know, I'm joined by Dr. Nicola Harker, a former NHS GP who left medicine after more than 20 years to teach one of the most overlooked skills in women's health: self-compassion. After experiencing burnout within a healthcare system that prioritised efficiency over human connection, Nicola realised that compassion wasn't simply a personality trait—it was a skill that could be learned, practised and strengthened. Together, we explore why so many women are relentlessly hard on themselves, why the inner critic feels so convincing, and how years of people-pleasing, perfectionism and self-sacrifice leave many women exhausted by the time they reach midlife. We also discuss the systemic bias women continue to experience in healthcare, why women's pain is so often dismissed, and how learning self-compassion can fundamentally change the way we lead, parent, work, heal and navigate menopause. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that the relationship you have with yourself shapes every other part of your life—and it's never too late to change that relationship. ️ If this episode re sonated with you, please subscribe, rate, and review the podcast—it helps more women and practitioners find these conversations. ✨ Resources & Links Mentioned in This Episode: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-harker-coaching/ ✨ Connect with Jacqueline Rose Join my Newsletter: https://preview.mailerlite.io/forms/1225699/160641692811134066/share Learn more about my Menopause Informed Training Program: https://www.jacquelinerosehealth.com/mitprogram Follow Me: ️ Website: https://www.jacquelinerosehealth.com/ ▶️ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@jacquelinerosehealth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacquelinerose-womenshealth/ ️ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theyogaroom120 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacquelinerose_womenshealth/
