Tell Me You Grew Up Hispanic Without Telling Me
If you grew up Hispanic, chances are at least a few of these are going to feel VERY familiar. For our second episode of Season 2—and a topic requested by one of you!—we’re taking a trip down memory lane and talking about what it was really like growing up in Hispanic families. From strict dating rules (especially if you were a girl) and chaperoned dates to having your entire social life put on hold because relatives were visiting from back home, we’re reminiscing about all the little things that made our childhoods uniquely ours. We’re talking about being handed the phone to “say hi” to a relative you swear you’ve never met, greeting every single person at a party with a kiss on the cheek, and, of course, operating on Hispanic time. Then there are the parties themselves—late nights, domino tables, cigar circles, pig roasts in the caja china, and enough food to feed three times the number of people who were actually invited. And it wouldn’t be complete without the nicknames that made absolutely no sense, Abuela’s sewing supplies hiding inside the cookie tin, the iconic bata de casa, the perfectly decorated living room nobody was actually allowed to sit in, and ALL the superstitions. Evil eye? Absolutely. Going outside with wet hair? Don’t even think about it. Twelve grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve? You better start chewing. Some of it made us laugh, some of it drove us crazy, and a lot of it we didn’t fully appreciate until we got older. But looking back, these traditions, quirks, rules, and memories are part of what made us who we are—and we wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. Make sure to follow us on all socials at tmi.fyi !!
