Hard Of Hearing
Originally Aired: October 31, 1938 The Lone Ranger #899, "Hard Of Hearing," the masked rider and Tonto rush to El Dorado, where a stagecoach robbery trial is underway. Jed Lynch stands accused of holding up a stage, killing the driver and guard, and stealing a gold shipment. The key witness is old Josephus Kinney, a hard-of-hearing former cook who was hiding inside the coach during the holdup. Despite his difficulty understanding questions, Kinney testifies that he clearly heard Jed's partner identified as "Lem Mason," though he conveniently becomes even more deaf when asked if he knows anyone by that name. The Lone Ranger suspects something isn't right about Kinney's selective hearing. The masked man and Tonto ride hard for two days to reach Lem Mason's ranch before the law can arrest him. They find Mason to be a struggling rancher who recently had to let Kinney go due to financial troubles. Mason admits he was away from home during the robbery, traveling to San Antonio to sell cattle, but the buyer he sought was out of town, leaving him with no alibi. Though Mason insists on his innocence, he refuses to voluntarily face trial in El Dorado, leaving the Lone Ranger to uncover the real truth behind Kinney's convenient testimony.
