Caroline Hopkinson-Woolley: The Disappearance of Agatha Christie (1926)
This week the critic, writer and guide Caroline Hopkinson-Woolley takes us back to 1926 to consider a mysterious event. This was the perplexing disappearance of the best-selling author Agatha Christie. Christie's disappearance happened at a moment of great tension both in her own life and in British history. That May the General Strike had upended society in a way that was both unprecedented and terrifying for the establishment. Christie, meanwhile, was simultaneously experiencing commercial success and private turmoil as her mother died and her marriage faltered. All these forces can be glimpsed in the strange disappearance of Christie shortly before Christmas that year. It is an event that has long puzzled historians and here Hopkinson-Woolley weighs the evidence. Enjoyed this?
