Wolf Creek: Some Are Never Seen Again
Send us Fan Mail How much of Wolf Creek actually happened? Greg McLean’s 2005 Australian horror film opens with the ominous claim that it is “based on actual events.” But Mick Taylor is fictional, and there was no massacre of three backpackers at Wolfe Creek Crater. The crimes that helped inspire the story, however, were terrifyingly real. In this episode of Truth Behind the Terror , we examine the Backpacker Murders committed by Ivan Milat , as well as the murder of British traveller Peter Falconio , the escape of Joanne Lees , and the conviction of Bradley Murdoch . We’ll also look at why travellers far from home have become such enduring targets in horror movies, how Wolf Creek fits into the brutal horror landscape of the 2000s, and whether its famous “based on actual events” claim really holds up.
