The Luckiest Thing I Never Earned: On Privilege, Gratitude, and Not Taking It for Granted
"It's just a lottery." None of us chose the family, the country, or the circumstances we were born into, and some of us got a much softer landing than others. In this episode of Trying Very Hard , Amanda and Monica talk honestly about growing up privileged: the international schools, the financial safety net, the doors that were always slightly more open, and the guilt, pressure, and gratitude that come with knowing none of it was earned. We get into financial privilege and growing up in a bubble, racial and gender privilege, pretty privilege (and the catch no one mentions), the way having every advantage can quietly turn into pressure and perfectionism instead of ease, when gratitude starts to feel performative, the privilege we each find hardest to admit out loud, and how you raise a child to be aware of all this without drowning them in guilt. No neat conclusions here. Just two friends trying to be honest about being lucky: what they're grateful for, what they're still uncomfortable naming, and what it means to hold all of it a little more lightly. We don't get everything right, and we say so. We'd love to hear how you think about your own privilege, and what you're grateful for, in the comments. If you've ever felt lucky and guilty at the same time, this one might feel familiar.
