Set in the fictional outback town of Nulla, the six-part series begins with the brutal death of a miner at the bottom of an opal mine, but quickly becomes something stranger than a conventional police drama. Michael discusses the show’s distinctly Australian tone, the dry humour and danger of Nulla, and how he approached playing Ivan as a brilliant, unpredictable detective who is difficult to read. The conversation also covers Ivan’s partnership with Nell, played by Liv Hewson, filming in and around Coober Pedy, the importance of landscape and underground spaces to the story, and what Michael hopes viewers will come to understand about Ivan by the end of the series.
