Ep. 36 Why You Feel the Need to “Make Up” for Eating—and Punish Yourself
You eat more than you intended, and almost immediately your mind starts figuring out how you're going to “make up” for it. Maybe you'll eat less tomorrow. Skip breakfast. Exercise more. Be “good” for the rest of the week. But what's actually behind that urge to punish yourself? In this episode of Unlearning Beautiful , I explore the deeper belief underneath food guilt, restriction, and compensation: the idea that when we've done something “bad,” we need to punish ourselves to correct it and become “good” again. I look at how we learn this good/bad framework early in life, how we eventually internalize it, and how it gets applied to food, exercise, our bodies—and so many other areas of our lives. Because this isn't just about eating. The same pattern can show up when we feel we're not productive enough, we're not a good enough parent or partner, we've made a mistake, or we've somehow fallen short. What if instead of immediately turning to shame, guilt, and punishment, we became curious? What happened? What was going on? What were we feeling or needing? What can we understand and learn from this? I explores why understanding—not self-punishment—is what allows us to actually take responsibility, grow, and make different choices. And ultimately, this work isn't just about making peace with your body. It's about making peace with being human.
