If you’ve ever wanted to swoop in and remove every obstacle in your kid’s path—only to realize school will happily provide brand-new obstacles by 8:05 a.m.—this episode is for you. In this conversation, I’m joined by Dr. Jon Eckert (professor at Baylor University, former teacher, and author of The Happiness Crisis: How Adversity Can Build a Resilient and Joyful Next Generation to unpack what kids actually need when life (and school) is hard. We talk about the difference between happiness and joy, why “letting kids struggle” can feel like a cruel suggestion when they’re already struggling, and how curiosity can change everything—at home and at school. What you’ll learn: - Why Dr. Eckert pushes back on “happiness” that’s circumstantial, comparison-based, and fleeting—and what he means by *joy* instead - The difference between pessimism, naïve optimism, and *gritty optimism* (and why gritty optimism is the goal) - Why struggle isn’t something to celebrate—but something kids can learn to move through more productively - How “chasing progress, not success” builds resilience (especially for kids who have struggled the most) - How curiosity helps adults avoid misreading behavior (including the question: “Do we have the story?”) - A powerful example of how teacher responses can make struggle *destructive* or *productive* - Why kids start seeking status around age 10—and how that changes how they respond to adults - How meaningful roles outside of school (service, jobs, teams, activities) can build confidence and connection This episode will help if: - Your child is already struggling and you feel tired of advice that sounds like “Just let them struggle more” - You want a more grounded way to build resilience without minimizing how hard things are - You suspect there’s “more to the story” behind your child’s school behavior, shutdowns, or frustration - You’re trying to keep your child’s self-worth from being measured only by grades and school performance - You want practical mindset shifts that help you stay connected to your kid—even when you can’t control what happens at school Resources & links: - Dr. Jon Eckert’s book + free resources (discussion guides, free chapters): https://thehappinesscrisis.com - Dr. Jon Eckert’s website: https://jonathaneckert.org - Baylor Center for School Leadership: https://baylorcenterforschoolleadership.org Book Recommendations: - David Yeager’s - 10 to 25 - David Brooks’ - How to Know a Person* - Angela Duckworth’s - Situated Follow Reframe Parenting for use-now tools and strategies for school success. www.reframeparenting.com Visit www.reframeparenting.com/blog to dive into blog posts & podcast episodes to discover more school success strategies and get tools designed with you and your child in mind.
