Untold Radio AM #311 Yakama Nation Sasquatch: Chilling Encounters with Mel Skahan
Aug 17, 20263h 20m
Deep in the shadow of Mount Adams, on more than a million acres of Yakama Nation forest, something has been leaving 22-inch tracks — and the man whose job it is to walk that country has spent three decades trying to make sense of it. This week on Untold Radio AM, MonsterQuest producer Doug Hajicek and Jeff "The Big Ragu," joined by guest host Roger Williams, sit down with prominent Bigfoot researcher Mel Skahan. An enrolled Yakama tribal member and forestry expert, Mel has become the person people go to when they see something they can't explain out in the timber — and the reports have piled up into the hundreds. Mel takes us from the 1995 day he and a coworker cut timber and found footprints with a five-and-a-half-foot stride, to the 2006 sighting of something large, black, and glistening moving through the trees, to the rocks thrown out of the dark, the vocalizations, and the smell he still calls unforgettable. He also talks about the turn his research took after a tribal medicine man gave him some advice — trading thermal cameras and night vision for a far more respectful approach rooted in Yakama tradition. This one goes past footprints and into something older. ⚠️ Some of these accounts are not for the faint of heart. WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE The 1995 timber-cruising encounter — 22-inch tracks, converging trails, and the feeling of being watched Mel's 2006 daylight sighting near Mount St. Helens country Rock throwing, tree knocks, howls, growls and whistles from the deep timber Why hundreds of reservation sighting reports rarely make it to the public The Native perspective: Sasquatch as a spiritual presence, not just an animal What a tribal medicine man told him — and why he put the trail cams away Doug Hajicek on how these accounts line up with what he filmed during MonsterQuest ABOUT OUR GUEST — MEL SKAHAN Mel Skahan is an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and works in the tribe's Forest Management Section, helping oversee roughly 1.2 million acres of tribal land in Washington State. Over the years he's become the primary point of contact for Sasquatch reports on the reservation, personally collecting hundreds of firsthand accounts. He has appeared on Coast to Coast AM and in numerous documentaries, and is widely respected for bridging field research with traditional Indigenous knowledge. Aug 17, 20263h 8m
**EP 312 – The Things That Hide Beyond the Trail with Julia Ronan and Dave Rogers** What happens when a Bigfoot research outing in the Arkansas Ozarks turns into something far stranger than tracks, howls, or wood knocks? This week on Untold Radio AM, hosts **Doug Hajicek** and **Jeff Perrella** welcome **Julia Ronan** and **Dave Rogers**. Julia, a Central Texas researcher and longtime research partner of Dave, has been in the field with Matt Lankford experimenting with the Snellgrove hum and Karl Sup hum. Julia doubts your audience has heard anything like it — and after you hear their firsthand account, you may never look at a Bigfoot investigation the same way again. Tune in for an episode packed with cryptid fieldwork, cutting-edge audio experiments, and one of the most unusual stories we’ve featured on the show. **About Untold Radio AM** The Untold Radio Network explores interesting new science, genomic studies, odd wildlife research, strange disappearances, cryptids, mysteries, life after death, interesting celebrities, UFOs, and other unexplained events — plus whatever topic we feel is truly UNTOLD.
