U.S. President Donald Trump has backed a voluntary safety accord with leading technology companies
The race to develop artificial intelligence or AI is intensifying a global debate over who should control and how to protect humanity from its risks. U.S. President Donald Trump has backed a voluntary safety accord with leading technology companies after a White House meeting, stressing industry self-regulation and American leadership. But that flies in the face of calls from others, including the U.N. Secretary General who has pushed for a multi-lateral AI risk-management framework, while Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is calling for stronger safeguards, including legislation. As Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports, at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on AI last week, warnings were clear that the increasingly powerful systems could threaten humanity if poorly managed.
