Sally Hayden on Love and War
For this bonus episode, foreign correspondent Sally Hayden talks to Richard about love in wartime — and why she wanted to tell stories beyond the familiar themes of loss and trauma. Her new book, This Is Also a Love Story , explores the different forms love can take in conflict and its aftermath. In Rwanda, genocide survivors who were left orphaned created new, artificial families to survive. In Ukraine, one couple found ways to keep their marriage alive while the husband served at the front. And in Iraq, couples risked punishment to marry in secret under Islamic State rule. These are stories of love, resilience and human connection in places where war has tried to destroy all three.
