Episode 2 Summary - Were We Even Raised in the Same Family? How can two people grow up in the same family and walk away with completely different stories about what happened? In Episode 2 of Estranged: Love, Hurt & Everything In Between, we peel back the layers of childhood memory, family roles, attachment, and emotional meaning to explore why a parent can sincerely say, “I did everything for you,” while their adult child sincerely says, “You were never there.” Drawing in part from the work of Dr. Gabor Maté, we look at the difference between what happened to us and what happened inside us because of it—and how a child’s interpretation of an experience can become a wound that lasts well into adulthood. We also ask a question that can completely change how we view our childhoods: Who were our parents when they were parenting us? Their age, culture, finances, marriage, trauma, emotional tools, family history, and stage of life may all have shaped the version of them that we experienced. This episode also explores why siblings can have radically different memories of the same parents, why intent and impact are not the same thing, and why “I did the best I could” and “I needed more” can both be true. We examine attachment versus authenticity, invisible family rules, generational patterns, the stories families tell about themselves, and what happens when one person challenges the accepted version of the past. Most importantly, this is not about excusing harm or pretending every perspective is equally valid. Context does not erase accountability, and curiosity is not absolution.
