Ep31: Snippet - Why Motivation Disappears in Chronic Illness Recovery & How to Get It Back
Aug 12, 202613 minS1
Living with ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, Long Covid, POTS, post-viral fatigue syndrome or related chronic illness can make motivation feel almost impossible. Not because you are lazy. Not because you are weak. And not because you simply need more discipline. When symptoms, fear of flare-ups, setbacks, pain, exhaustion and disappointment become part of everyday life, even small steps can start to feel overwhelming. In this video, I explore why motivation often changes during chronic illness recovery — especially when people move from desperation into partial improvement — and why relying only on “pushing through” or fear of staying sick can become exhausting. We’ll look at the deeper drivers of motivation, why recovery goals need to feel emotionally meaningful but also realistic, and how small positive experiences can help people stay engaged without forcing themselves beyond their limits. This video is for anyone who feels stuck, flat, unmotivated, discouraged, or unsure how to keep moving forward in recovery. QUESTIONS FOR THE COMMENTS: How has your motivation changed over time — and what has helped you stay engaged in recovery? Ep30: Snippet – The Real Problem with People Experiencing ME/CFS, Long Covid, Fibromyalgia and POTS
Jul 21, 20268 minS1
Many people with ME/CFS, Long COVID, Fibromyalgia, POTS and related chronic illnesses have been told they're weak, lazy, or simply not trying hard enough. But after years of illness and more than a decade of supporting others, I've come to believe there may be a different problem entirely. Why do so many people continue pushing through debilitating symptoms? Why do they keep trying to meet responsibilities, support others, and carry on long after their bodies are asking them to stop? In this video, I share a personal experience that led me to reflect on an often-overlooked pattern I see in people living with chronic illness. We explore the push-crash cycle, the pressure of the "shoulds" and "musts" that many of us carry, and why doing less is not always the same as truly resting. We'll also discuss why rest is about more than inactivity, how guilt and self-pressure can make it difficult to recover, and why learning to be kinder to ourselves may be harder than it sounds. If you've experienced ME/CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), Long COVID, Fibromyalgia, POTS, PVFS or a related chronic illness, I'd love to hear your perspective. Has this illness taught you to slow down and rest, or have you found yourself pushing through for far longer than you should have? E29: Snippet - Is Recovery a Spiritual Journey? Lessons from ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, POTS & Long Covid (PVFS)
Jun 28, 202615 minS1
Many people with ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, POTS, Long Covid and related chronic illnesses describe recovery as a "spiritual journey." Years ago, I rolled my eyes whenever I heard this. As someone focused on science, physiology, nervous system dysfunction and understanding root causes, it made little sense to me. But after interviewing many people who recovered, I began noticing a pattern. In this video, I explore why so many people describe recovery this way, what they actually mean by it, and how the lessons learned through chronic illness can sometimes support both quality of life and recovery progress. We explore: • Why chronic illness often changes what we value most • How suffering can force us to re-evaluate priorities • The difference between acceptance and resignation • Letting go of control, expectations and perfectionism • Why living in the present moment can reduce unnecessary suffering • How these changes may help reduce push-crash cycles and setbacks • Why some people describe recovery as a transformative life journey Whether you consider yourself spiritual or not, this discussion may offer a different perspective on recovery and what can be learned through adversity. If you are new here, I'm Dan Neuffer, author of CFS Unravelled and creator of the ANS REWIRE recovery program. Please share your own experience in the comments: Have you found that chronic illness changed your priorities or perspective on life? Do you see recovery as a physical journey, a personal journey, a spiritual journey—or something else entirely?
