Growing Up Too Soon, Endometriosis & Living Beyond the Diagnosis with Sam Halliwell
Sam Halliwell grew up carrying responsibilities most children never have to think about. By ten, she was helping run the family pub, caring for her younger sister and managing life around her mother's illness. School brought its own difficulties, while theatre became one of the few places where she felt she could escape. Early on as a teenager, severe menstrual pain led to another long struggle. After being repeatedly dismissed by even her doctors, Sam was eventually diagnosed with stage-four endometriosis, followed by recurring symptoms, multiple surgeries, strong pain medication, fertility difficulties and an ectopic pregnancy. When conventional options felt increasingly limited, she began exploring food, movement, environmental changes, her menstrual cycle and self-development — an approach she says reduced her symptoms, helped her conceive naturally and was followed by an unexpected finding during later surgery: the extensive endometriosis her surgeon expected to see was no longer visible. In this episode, Sam shares: Growing up with adult responsibilities from a very young age Family dynamics, bullying and finding refuge in theatre Years of severe pain, medical dismissal and finally receiving an endometriosis diagnosis Surgery, recurring symptoms and the realities of living and working with chronic pain Fertility treatment and the pressure endometriosis placed on trying to conceive The holistic approach she began exploring through food, movement, environmental changes, her menstrual cycle and self-development Conceiving naturally and the unexpected findings during surgery after an ectopic pregnancy How she began exploring connections between stress, emotions, the nervous system and physical symptoms Motherhood, postnatal anxiety and depression, the return of her symptoms and eventual hysterectomy Leaving accountancy to become an endometriosis coach Sam's story is ultimately about learning to understand her body differently after years of feeling as though it was working against her — and how those experiences have changed both her health choices and the work she does today. Please note: Sam shares her personal experience and views in this episode. The discussion is not a substitute for individual medical advice.
