Episode #9
The One Where She Chose the Plants
I had the pleasure of having The Ladybird Company come onto Womb Talk for our 9th episode of season 4. We take a look into some of the nutrition and herbal allies for women's cycles, and about telling her story that influenced her to get into herbal medicine. As well as the healing wisdom of our ancestors. Please check her out at: www.theladybirdcompany.ca BIO: Mackenzie Laurin is the founder, horticulturist, and practicing herbalist behind The Ladybird Company; where her work is a reflection of her lifelong study of the natural world. In 2021, she graduated from the Horticulture Technologist diploma program at Olds College, where she focused her studies on native ecosystem restoration, permaculture, and ethnobiology. Following college, she continued her education through independent study, fieldwork, and everyday practice; delving into the studies of herbal medicine, nutrition, and the biological sciences. She began to explore the threads that weave together health, ecology, and culture; it was in this intersection that, in 2025, The Ladybird Company was finally born. The Ladybird Company offers a collection of handcrafted goods inspired by old ways and made for modern life: apothecary products; artisan botanical skincare, haircare, and pet care; culinary herbalism pantry staples; low-waste kitchen & cleaning items; and medicinal plant seeds. Each item is rooted in respect for the earth, thoughtfully crafted with love and intention, and meant to nourish the spirit as much as the body. Alongside these, we curate a selection of non-fiction books and kitchen & apothecary tools. Outside of the retail space, Mackenzie leads classes, workshops, educational nature walks, and other events rooted in ecology, heritage, and hands-on learning. She offers herbalism consultation services & custom herbal formulation, and is in training to become a birth & death doula. Through the reclamation of traditional knowledge, and the insights of modern research, The Ladybird Company seeks to bring household healing into the modern home. This desire, to place the power of healing once again in the hands of the people, is the beating heart of the company.
