Why Women Face a Higher Bar for Likeability in Leadership
Aug 17, 202611 minS4
In this episode of Women at Work with Fexingo, Lucas and Luna explore the likeability trap that women in leadership face—a double standard that penalizes women for assertiveness while rewarding the same behavior in men. They anchor the conversation in a recent study from the University of Colorado Boulder, which found that women leaders who show warmth are judged as less competent, while men who show the same warmth are praised. The hosts unpack the real-world consequences: women walk a tightrope between being seen as too soft or too sharp, and this bias affects everything from performance reviews to promotion decisions. They discuss practical strategies for women leaders and their allies, including how to use warmth and competence as a deliberate advantage, how to recognize the bias in your own workplace, and how managers can combat it. With a focus on actionable advice, this episode offers a fresh lens on a challenge many women face daily, and provides tools to navigate it with confidence. Tune in for a candid, insightful conversation that frames likeability as a structural issue—not a personal failing. #LikeabilityTrap #WomenInLeadership #GenderBias #LeadershipDoubleStandard #WomenAtWork #CareerAdvice #WorkplaceBias #CompetenceVsWarmth #WomenInBusiness #LeadershipSkills #FemaleLeaders #CareerGrowth #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #WomenInSTEM #InclusiveWorkplace #LeadershipTips #CareerConversations Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
Why Women Face a Double Standard for Emotional Labor at Work
Aug 16, 20269 minS4
In this episode of Women at Work, Lucas and Luna explore how emotional labor — the unseen work of managing feelings, smoothing tensions, and anticipating needs — creates a unique career tax for women. They anchor the conversation in a 2023 research review that found women do about 59 percent more emotional labor than men in the workplace, and discuss how this load shows up in everything from daily team interactions to leadership pipelines. The hosts get specific: what emotional labor actually looks like in a typical week, why it's rarely recognized in performance reviews, and how it compounds to stall advancement. They also dig into the tricky part — how some of this work is necessary for teams to function, but the burden falls disproportionately. Lucas and Luna tease apart the difference between tasks that are genuinely part of the job and those that are quietly assigned because of gender. They talk about practical moves for women who want to reset boundaries without looking difficult, and what managers can do to redistribute the load. If you've ever left a meeting mentally exhausted from managing everyone else's feelings, this episode names the problem and gives you language to address it. #EmotionalLabor #GenderDoubleStandard #WomenAtWork #CareerAdvancement #InvisibleWork #WorkplaceDynamics #LeadershipPipeline #GenderBias #ManagerTips #BoundarySetting #TeamCulture #UnpaidWork #WomenInLeadership #Careers #WorkplaceCulture #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #WomenEmpowerment Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
In this episode of Women at Work with Fexingo, Lucas and Luna dig into the sponsorship gap—the structural reason why qualified women often advance more slowly than their male peers. While mentorship offers advice, sponsorship requires a senior leader to actively advocate for your promotion, risking their own political capital. Drawing on research from the Center for Talent Innovation, they explore how women are over-mentored but under-sponsored, and why this disconnect persists even in 2026. They discuss the 'sponsor effect'—how having a sponsor can accelerate career traction—and break down why women's networks often lean toward peer connections rather than powerful advocates. They also address what organizations can do to formalize sponsorship and what women can do to build these relationships without falling into the likability trap. If you've ever wondered why some people seem to rocket past you despite equal work, this episode is for you. #SponsorshipGap #WomenAtWork #CareerAdvancement #Leadership #MentorshipVsSponsorship #WomenInBusiness #CareerGrowth #WorkplaceEquity #ProfessionalDevelopment #WomenInLeadership #CorporateAdvocacy #InclusiveWorkplace #CareerStrategy #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #WomenInCareers #CareerCoach #CareerTips Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the likability tax: the hidden penalty women face when they're competent, direct, or assertive at work. Using real-world examples — from a female CFO who got pushback for being 'too blunt' to a manager who was called 'bossy' for assigning tasks her male counterpart did without comment — they unpack the double bind that forces women to choose between being liked and being respected. They look at the research on warmth and competence, why the penalty intensifies for women of color, and what happens when women lean into their own style anyway. Practical strategies include reframing 'bossy' as 'decisive,' finding advocates who can vouch for your competence, and knowing when the likability tax is too high to pay. They also touch on how companies can retrain managers to evaluate outputs, not personalities. This episode is a must-listen for any woman who's ever been told to 'smile more' or 'soften the message' — and for the colleagues who wonder why she has to. #LikabilityTax #DoubleBind #WomenAtWork #CareerAdvice #WorkplaceBias #GenderBias #Leadership #WomenInBusiness #CompetencePenalty #WarmthVsCompetence #CareerGrowth #WomenLeaders #WorkplaceCulture #CommunicationSkills #Careers #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #WomenSupportingWomen Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
