Women Living the Questions
Joan Kron: A 98-Year-Old Troublemaker
In this episode, host Ruby Tugade speaks with Joan Kron, a 98 year-old writer, journalist, artist, and cultural observer whose career has taken her from the New York art world to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Allure. Joan began writing at ten, when her mother sent her science-fiction story about life on Mars to the local newspaper. She went on to work with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Indiana, creating art objects now held by the Museum of Modern Art. After leaving the art world, Joan found journalism almost by accident, turning a story about marijuana into a magazine cover story and later creating the fashion beat at The Wall Street Journal. She spent twenty-five years covering plastic surgery at Allure. Joan also speaks candidly about losing her daughter and living with grief across seven decades, as well as independence, beauty, aging, friendship, and the women of her generation who found ways to make their own platforms.
