Jack Finnigan joins us to talk about Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey , because apparently watching a three-hour movie wasn’t enough—we also had to spend another 79 minutes arguing about it. We debate whether Nolan made a masterpiece or a very expensive excuse to yell about mythology, whether Matt Damon was actually the right guy to play Odysseus, why Anne Hathaway is basically the MVP, and why Tom Holland continues to exist despite our objections. We get into the Trojan horse, Hades, practical effects, PTSD, hubris, O Brother, Where Art Thou? , 70mm IMAX, and the deeply important question of whether a movie can be both spectacular and kind of emotionally empty. Jack brings the film-nerd perspective, Levi brings the skepticism, and everyone brings an unhealthy amount of confidence to conversations about ancient Greece that none of us were qualified to have. In the end, we agree the movie looks incredible, Hades rules, Nolan knows how to make an absolutely massive movie, and Matt Damon is… fine.
