Bill Glass

William Sheppeard Glass was an American football player known for his career as a defensive end in the National Football League. He played college football at Baylor University, where he was a three-year letterman and was recognized as a unanimous All-America guard in 1956. He was drafted in the first round of the 1957 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and briefly played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League before joining the Lions. Glass later played for the Cleveland Browns from 1962 to 1968, where he became a standout player and a Pro Bowl selection. During his tenure with the Browns, he contributed significantly to their NFL championship victory in 1964 and their Eastern Division championship in 1965. Recent estimates credit Glass with 77.5 sacks during his Browns career, including 16.5 in the 1965 season, and he holds the team's single-season record for sacks. Beyond his football career, Glass authored several books, including his memoir titled Get in the Game! He also co-wrote a book offering advice for young men called Stand Tall and Straight in 1967, which went into multiple printings. After his football career, Glass attended Southwestern Seminary and worked with Reverend Billy Graham, who encouraged him toward a religious vocation. He founded Bill Glass Ministries in 1969, focusing on prison ministry and bringing the gospel to inmates across the United States. William Glass passed away on December 5, 2021, at the age of 86.
