Jermaine Dupri Mauldin, born on September 23, 1972, is an American record producer, rapper, songwriter, and music executive. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he is the son of Columbia Records executive Michael Mauldin and began his musical career at the age of nine. Dupri gained recognition after discovering the teen hip-hop duo Kris Kross in 1991; he wrote and produced their 1992 hit single Jump, which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and was named the 23rd most successful song of the decade. In 1993, he founded So So Def Recordings through a joint venture with Columbia Records. The label has signed numerous acts, including Xscape, Bow Wow, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Dem Franchize Boyz, YoungBloodZ, and Anthony Hamilton. As a producer, Dupri has collaborated with Mariah Carey, Usher, Monica, and Nelly, producing a total of 11 singles that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. As a solo artist, his debut album Life in 1472 was released in 1998 and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200; it featured the top 40 single The Party Continues and the Grammy-nominated Money Aint a Thang. His second album Instructions, released in 2001, peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and included the hit Welcome to Atlanta. Dupri also served as Mariah Carey's talent manager beginning in 2013 and co-created the reality series The Rap Game in 2015. He has received 12 Grammy Award nominations.
