Joe Connolly

Joseph Connolly, born on 13 October 1956, is an Irish sports figure known for his achievements in hurling. He played as a centre-forward for the Galway senior team, making his debut in 1976. Connolly captained Galway to their first All-Ireland victory in nearly six decades in 1980, a year marked by multiple titles including an All-Star Award and Texaco Hurler of the Year recognition. He also secured success at club level with Castlegar, winning an All-Ireland medallion, two Connacht medals, and two county championships. His talents extended to Gaelic football, with a notable Junior Gaelic football title with Éire Óg in 1980. Connolly's early playing career began at school in St Mary's College, Galway, and he represented Galway at minor and under-21 levels before establishing himself in the senior ranks. His inter-county career was cut short in 1984 due to a persistent knee injury after making 22 championship appearances. Beyond inter-county play, he achieved success with the Connacht team, earning two Railway Cup medals, and at university level, he won a Fitzgibbon Cup with University College Galway. Hailing from a large Irish-speaking family with strong Gaeltacht roots and a hurley-making background, Connolly's sporting aptitude was shared by many of his brothers, including John, Pádraic, Michael, Tom, Gerry, and Murt, all of whom played for Castlegar and Galway. His son Barry has played for the Dublin senior football team. After retiring as a player, Connolly pursued coaching and management roles, including serving as a Galway team selector and managing Castlegar. In July 2025, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Gaelic Players' Association.
