Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry was an American politician, planter, and orator known for his strong opposition to a centralized federal government. Born in Hanover County, Virginia, he was primarily educated at home and became a self-taught lawyer after an unsuccessful business venture. Henry gained prominence through his legal practice and inflammatory rhetoric against British policies such as the Stamp Act of 1765. He served as a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774, where he helped draft petitions to the British Crown and the Continental Association, and he gained national recognition for his powerful speeches at the Virginia Convention. He is famously remembered for his declaration, 'Give me liberty or give me death!' Henry was an early advocate for independence and participated in drafting key documents like the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the state's constitution. He served as the first and sixth governor of Virginia, holding five one-year terms. Henry's concerns about the potential overreach of a strong federal government led him to oppose the ratification of the United States Constitution, both because he feared concentrating power and the absence of a Bill of Rights. He declined to participate in the 1787 Constitutional Convention and later declined several federal appointments. Throughout his life, Henry was a slaveholder with hopes of ending the institution but no concrete plan beyond restricting slave importation. He returned to practicing law in his later years and is remembered primarily for his influential oratory and his advocacy for independence.
